About Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School
In 1982 the small western Pennsylvania town of Midland lost the steel mill that was its major employer. Families moved away, the tax base severely eroded and finances forced the school board to close the town’s great source of pride: its high school. Little did distressed community leaders know their town's blackest hour would one day lead to the creation of a greater source of pride: the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School. Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley recently visited Midland to announce PA Cyber had again made AYP, the federal standard of school effectiveness – something no charter or cyber charter school of its size in the nation had ever done.
“What’s going on here in Midland isn’t just a story in Midland; people across the country are paying attention,” Lt. Gov. Cawley said. “You’ve not only taken a town that was dying and brought it new life and vitality, you have proven to everyone that our educational system can be revitalized across the state and across the nation . . .you are indeed leading us into the future.” Led by Dr. Nick Trombetta, its founder and CEO, PA Cyber opened in 2000 with a staff of 10 and 527 students. Today PA Cyber educates 11,000 K-12 students statewide. A spin-off nonprofit, the National Network of Digital Schools (www.nndsonline.org), was founded in 2005 to share the hard-won online educational expertise beyond state borders. NNDS now provides the premium Lincoln Interactive online curriculum (www.lincolninteractive.com) to 400 schools in 19 states. Dr. Trombetta and the same forward-thinking community leaders founded Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School (www.lppacs.org) and Center (www.lppac.org) in 2006 in Midland. Lincoln Park teaches dance, music, creative writing, musical theater, media arts and health arts science to 600 arts-passionate students in grades 8-12 from 58 school districts. Steel once was forged in Midland. Today, the innovative educators of PA Cyber, NNDS and Lincoln Park are forging the future of American education.
